Connor Cycles Debuts Ash Wood 29er at North American Handmade Bicycle Show
DENVER – (February 14, 2013) – Connor Cycles, Denver builder of the custom-built “Woody 29er Scorcher,” a cruiser running 29-inch wheels made from sustainably harvested American ash wood and reinforced with Kevlar construction, will introduce its bike at the North American Handmade Bicycle Show at the Denver Convention Center this February 22-24. Connor Cycles will be the only new local bike builder at the show and is one of a handful of craftsmen in North America bringing wood’s inherent properties to bicycles.
Connor Cycles founder, Chris Connor points out that “Wood is a natural choice for bikes; think of its toughness and vibration dampening properties when used in sledge hammers, baseball bats, skis and snowboards. And when cared for, wood will last and stay strong for decades. When I developed the Woody Scorcher, I went with 29-inch wheels to take advantage of their ability to smooth out any surface—something that hadn’t been tried yet. The combination of the wood, the bowed shape of the frame and the wooden handlebars, plus the big wheels results in a premium ride and smoothness unlike any other bike out there.”
Connor’s attention to detail and deep understanding of wood as a burly—and beautiful—raw material can be seen in the walnut inlays, finger joints around critical areas, and bowed, Kevlar reinforced seat stays that add to the frame’s dampening ability and durability. His Kevlar-reinforced handlebars have even been tested to hold firm under the weight of a car.
Each Connor Cycles’ frame is made to order in small, medium, and large, and can be specified to run as a single-speed, dual-speed internal hub, driven by a chain or Gates carbon belt drive. Coaster brake hubs or disc brakes are available, with the rear disc brake mounted on Connor’s custom aluminum rear dropouts. A stylish Brooks saddle and leather handlebar tape, along with lightweight aluminum forks, seat post, bottom bracket, cranks and pedals, round out a total weight of 30 pounds (single-speed setup).
Woody 29er Scorchers start at $2,500 (frame only). The price for a complete bike $3,300 – $3,500 (depending on parts and wheels selected by customer).
