Mike Horgan loved to ride bikes. Road, track, mountain, cyclo-cross, rolling in the hills and flat out on the flats. From Belle Harbor, New York to Boulder, Colorado, Mike became a serious cyclist and pursued it as a career. He raced in all the major US races, including the Killington Stage Race, Casper Classic, Tour of the Gila, Tour of Somerville, National Championships, and the Tour of Texas. And in 1993 and 1994, he finished the Milk Ras in Ireland with the National “B” Team.
Mike left Queens to live in Boulder with a few friends that came before him. He attended the University of Colorado, lived on “the Hill,” and loved to drink Guinness. He made lots of friends through cycling, school and work – everybody liked him.
On October 1, 1994, Mike died suddenly of heart failure at the age of 22. There was no clear explanation for why or how he died. His death was a shock to all who knew him, and his friends and family have missed him in many ways.
The Mike Horgan Hill Climb is our way of remembering Mike, and honoring his spirit and love for cycling. He loved to climb the hills in and around Boulder – and the course (especially the climb up Magnolia) is befitting of such an event. Mike would’ve loved it.

so sad that he left us at such a young age. I no longer live in Boulder but LOVED the rides there as much as Mike did! I recently had a heart attack after racing again after a 14 year break from competitive cycling.
I was in Allentown, PA and was fortunate enough that someone (Bruce Donaghy) got me to the ER. We just can’t understand some things in this life!
